With Ben Chilwell certain to miss the remainder of the season, Sal could be given a shot at Chelsea, where Marcos Alonso is the only left-back available.

Chelsea is yet to issue an official statement, but according to Goal, Ben Chilwell will be sidelined for the rest of the season. During Chelsea's 4-0 Champions League triumph over Juventus at Stamford Bridge at the end of November, the left-back tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Chilwell is expected to be sidelined for six to nine months after club medical professionals decided he needs surgery. As a result, Thomas Tüchel's first-team squad is down to Marcos Alonso as the sole available left-back. Chilwell's absence allows Sal to enter. Tüchel has used the Spanish midfielder as a wing-back, which he claims is a position he is comfortable with. He was utilised in a deeper role out on the left in his final months at Atlético, which he didn't like and was one of the reasons he wanted to go, but if he can cover for Chilwell, he will at least get more playing time. On deadline day of the previous transfer window, Saul joined Chelsea on a season-long loan. The Spaniard has struggled to adjust to life in the Premier League, having only made six appearances in the starting XI, half of which came in the EFL Carabao Cup. When his loan deal expires in June, the Blues will not exercise their option to acquire him outright.

The 27-year-old was fed up with training outside of his natural position at Atlético. In the first three league games of the season, Simeone used him as an attacking left-back, but the player's patience was put to the test. He said that he feels most comfortable in midfield, which is his natural position. Surprisingly, he may now profit from his experience playing in a five-man defence under Simeone while also assisting Chelsea. Chelsea could use the January transfer window to bring in a more experienced left-back, according to some reports. Everton's Lucas Digne, Barcelona's Sergio Dest, and Ajax's Nicolas Tagliafico have all been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
